note* The Gorom garden is one of 60 created in Burkina Faso thanks to the support of donors such as the Lions Club International, which has been working in this country for many years and adopted 85 gardens.Cultivating a food garden might seem like an irrelevant gesture in an immense continent such as Africa. Gripped by constant crises, it is also oriented to- wards intensive agriculture based on monocultures for export, synthetic chemical fertilizers and, in some coun- tries, GM crops such as Bt cotton. However, Slow Food’s project to culti- vate 10,000 food gardens is inspiring the development of a network of farm- ers, agronomists, students and chefs. This network is an important steptowards a more sustainable future, bringing back a way of farming that is conscious of the needs of local com- munities, liberated from the designs imposed by international financial insti- tutions and foreign investors.in SchoolThe children who attend Gorom school in the far north of Burkina Faso wake up at 5 am.
