They repre- sent 40% of the active population at a global level.Family farming is fairly diversified across different continents, countries and biomes. It particularly varies de- pending on the type and average di- mensions of property, the technology used by families, how they relate to the market and the amount of income generated. In this variegated universe, however, small family units dominate, accounting for over 500 million out of a total of 570 million farms worldwide. These small units are basically dedicat- ed to the production of food on a small scale, but when looking at productionas a whole, they are responsible for the majority of the supply of food that ar- rives on tables every day, which feeds most of the global population.the functionSof family farmingFamily farming has multiple functions within the rural environment and plays different roles within society. It is an integral part of development, glob- ally and in every country, and can become a solid model of sustainable development. One of the main func- tions of family farming is guaranteeing food security, by protecting traditional foods. This sector is key to eliminating hunger in the world, as it is responsi- ble for almost 60% of total agricultural production.
