They show us how their work is about nourishment, but also the joy of living: the happiness that comes from good and beautiful things, from sharing, from the wisdom that preserves the Earth in order to leave it in better shape for future generations.For farmers don’t make war, they are victims of war. They don’t cause pollution, they are victims of pollution. They don’t get rich, they are held at ransom by those who have got rich behind their backs. They go hungry yet, paradoxically, the people who make them go hungry are the very people they work for, the people whose daily food they produce. The use of time, the meaning of work, the value of food, a sense of limitation, an intimate rapport with nature and the environment—these are prerogatives of the human race, but today we are losing them by the wayside. This is why we’re asserting the importance of biodiversity every day at Expo, and for three days we’ll be bringing the world’s attention to the people who know better than anyone how to preserve it: The farmers and food producers whose humble, beautiful stories you can read on the following pages.9
