The family farming model has persisted across cultures and continents for millennia, with endless varieties of it still persisting today, as the concrete ex- amples in this Almanac show. For IFAD, every year is a year of family farming. Smallholder men and women are the core group that our investment programs are designed to support. Both an international financial institution and a United Nations agency, IFAD has invested about US$15.8 billion in low-interest loans and grants, reaching about 430 million rural people since the Fund began operations in 1978.12 almanaC©IFad/G.m.B.aKaSh
