Vladimir Tomić is 12 when he arrives in Copenhagen with his family. They are fleeing Bosnia and Herzegovina, a land ravaged by a terriblewar. Together with thousands of people, they are accommodated on a floating platform called Flotel. Alle porte di questo rifugio semi-sconosciuto, ogni sera ha luogo un drammatico ri- tuale che porta a tafferugli talvolta violenti. Le guardie hanno il difficile compito di “smistamento dei poveri”: prima le donne e i bambini, poi gli uomini. Mentre la capacità totale del rifugio è di 100 posti a sedere, solo 50 “eletti” saranno ammes- si al suo interno e otterranno un pasto caldo e un letto.
